Its a bird! its a plane! oh wait never mind........
Artillery before WW1 was just really cannons, but in WW1 the shells got bigger, the guns got bigger, and they could farther. The cannons were getting better and better until the 1900's where they became different. You didn't have to see what you were aiming at and could shoot miles away. During the war, the two main uses of artillery were to shoot gas into enemy trenches and to damage bunkers and barbed wire right before an attack.
The french were the first to use artillery-launched gas in the beginning of 1915. Where the allies tried to have more guns, the germans had some that were better. An example is a german gun called "big bertha" that could shoot up to 10 miles away and had a half ton round...but they only had around 10 of these. Artillery was a major factor in the war around a hundred thousand men died from artillery. A important use of it involved the first day of the battle for argonne forrest where the allies had a gun for every 8 yards and fired around a quarter of a million rounds. The artillery from before WW1 to WW1 was a big leap and now every military in the world has it and it just keeps getting better and better.
