Grenades had been around for years but the ones used during WW1 were the closest to modern-day ones as possible. Before the official start of the war, Germany had about 170,000 grenades which was more than any other country.
When the trench warfare started, one of the main uses of the grenade was bombing parties. Bombing parties were where a group of men around 8 would move up with an assault and when they passed a dug out in the trench they would clear them out one by one or take prisoners. Grenades really took off after WW1 too, by the end of the war the U.S had made 26 million different types of grenades...a year after they had made 33 million. Something as simple as a thrown bomb into a trench is now produced in hundreds of millions a year around the world.
